Christian Astrology Outline – Fourth House Questions

Chapter 32: Of the fourth HOUSE, and the judgment depending thereupon.

To find a thing hid or mislaid.

Querent is L1, the thing lost is L2.

If the thing belongs to a brother or sister, then use L4 (derived second house of kindred), if it belongs to father, use L5 (derived L2 of parents), if mother L11, and so on.

  • If L2 is in any angle, then the missing thing is within the house of the querent.
  • If L2 is in the 1st house, or in the sign where L1 is, or in one of L1’s houses, then the hidden thing is in that room that the querent most frequents.
  • If L2 is in H10, then it is where the querent works if the querent works outside the home, or if the querent works at home it would be in the living or dining room.  Lilly gives a number of possibilities that apply to the renaissance times.
  • If L2 is in the seventh, then it’s in the room of his wife or female servants.
  • If L2 is in H4, then it is in the oldest room of the house or where an older person lives or lived.
  • Look at the sign the L2 significator is in: If airy and the POF also be airy, then look to the top of the house or upper part of the room, if outside then on the highest part of the ground or hill;
  • If L2 is water, then look near water.
  • If L2 is fiery, look near the chimney or where iron is near or in, or near the walls of the house.
  • If L2 is earthy, the thing is on the ground, or under the floor; if outside then near a bridge where people come to ground.
  • If the thing is going out of one sign and entering into another, then it is behind something or other or fallen between two things. Or between two rooms.

Pg. 203. Lilly goes on to tell how the ancients judged what part of the house or grounds the object was, and said they had many rules involving the lord of the house and directionality of the houses the significators are in, the rules for which can be found on page 133 of CA.  Lilly didn’t think these rules were accurate enough, so he devised his own:

If the missing object was in a house and not stolen:

  • Ascendant sign, its nature, and the quarter of heavens it signified.
  • The sign of H4.
  • Sign of L4.
  • Sign of the Moon.
  • Sign of H2.
  • Sign of L2.
  • Sign of POF.

Consider the quality of the signs whether East, West, North or south by the number of testimonies. Airy signs above ground; fiery signs near a wall; earthy signs on the floor; watery, near a moist place in the room.

Pg. 205 –Chapter 33 –

Of buying and selling houses, lands, farms, etc.

  • Querent is represented by the Ascendant and L1 and the planet from whom the Moon is separated (whether they are the buyer or seller, although it is usually the buyer).
  • H7 represents the seller or other party.
  • H4 and the planets placed within it, L4, and the Moon itself represent the condition of the house.
  • H10, its Lord and any planets placed there signify the price of the house, whether it is too expensive or a good deal.

Particulars:

  • If L1 and L7 are in any good applying aspect, then the seller has good will to the buyer.
  • If the Lords are essentially dignified in their application or translation of light, or if they meet by bodily conjunction, it’s probably the purchase will conclude with little labor.
  • If the application is by square or opposition, the house will sell, but only after a great deal of bother and effort and much expenditure of time.

Also, this particular:

  • If L1 or the Moon apply to L4,
  • or conversely, if L4 or the moon apply to L1,
  • or if only L1 apply to L4 and L1 receives L4 in any of his dignities,
  • or if L1 is emplaced in H4
  • or if the Moon or L4 be in H1

then the querent will buy/sell the house at the time in question.

Also, this particular:

If the Moon transfers light from L4 to L1, then the deal will be concluded, but through third parties (like lawyers) rather than directly between the buyer and seller.

If there is no application or transfer, then it is not likely that any deal will be concluded.

Of the goodness or badness of the Land or House.

If the two malefics are in H4, whether they are potent (essentially strong) or peregrine; or if L4 is retrograde or unfortunate or in fall or detriment, then the querent will not get good use of the land/house.

If Venus, Jupiter, or north node is in H4, or if L4 is emplaced in H4, then the purchaser can expect good use of the land/house for many years to come.

Quality of the ground: (pg. 205-6)

  • Asc. significator of tenants, famers, etc.
  • H4 is the quality of the soil or the house or houses.
  • Desc is the herbage.
  • MC is the trees and woods and plants growing on the lands.

Pg 206 – Tenants good or ill:

  • If infortune occupies the Ascendant the tenants will be dishonest, unwilling to acknowledge the goodness of the land.
  • If a fortune the tenants will be honest and not give the landlord any problems.
  • If an infortune in H1/Asc. is direct the tenants will wear out the land.
  • If the infortunes are retrograde, they will run out on the lease or will “put the land upon the landlord”.

Wood on the Ground (pg. 206-207):

  • If a fortunate planet is in the MC, the land will have good timber.
  • If the fortune is retrograde, there will be many trees but not much timber, or that the trees are decayed or that the seller has already sold them.
  • If there is an infortune in the MC, then there are few trees, if retrograde, someone has stolen or wasted them.
  • If there are no planets in the MC, then look to L10:
  • If L10 beholds H10 in good aspect and in any of its dignities, there is some wood on the ground.
  • If L10 does not behold H10 there is little or no wood and it is worth nothing.
  • If L10 is oriental and beholds his own house, the trees are young ones or the woods of small growth or copses (small groups of trees), if direct the Trees are found, if retrograde there will be many trunks and hallow trees amoung them.

Then consider H7 (angle of the West) which declares the quality of the herbage (pasture, vegetation).

  • If Jupiter or Venus is found in H7, it’s an argument for plenty of grass, corn, small plants. If an infortune is there, judge the contrary.

Quality of the ground: (pg. 206-7)

To know the property of the earth consider H4.

  • If a Fire sign is on the cusp of the house, then it is hilly, mountainous, dry and hard piece of ground.
  • If an Earth sign, then the ground is good for grazing, or tillage (farming
  • If an Air sign the ground is hilly and plain, with some part of it being good and others not so.
  • If a water sign, there is a river, or a water source.

Also consider this:

  • If an Infortune be in the sign of H4, retrograde or in fall or detriment, the land will be unhappy in whatever the planet signifies.
  • If Scorpio is on the cusp of H4 and Saturn is there and is either retrograde or afflicted, it is sure that the land is afflicted with too much water or is boggy or otherwise unwholesome.  If near the sea a problem with the banks overflowing.
  • If Saturn afflict a fiery sign in H4 then the land is barren, stony, no water, yields no profit without infinite labor.
  • If Saturn is afflicted by retrogradation of an air sign, it’s been managed badly by previous farmers.
  • If Saturn is unfortunate in an Earthy sign, the land is good, but it has been poorly tended to by its occupiers due to laziness or not wanting to put time and money into the land.

Pg. 208 If the land is cheap or dear (expensive).

Look to H10 for this:

  • If L10 is angular, direct or string in essential dignities, the price will be high, too high.
  • If L10 is afflicted, cadent, combust, slow of motion, then the price will not rise high.

If it be good to hire or take the Farm, House, or Land desired:

  • Asc & L1 is the person buying or renting the land or house.
  • H7 and L7 is the person selling or renting the house/land.
  • H10 and L10 is the profit that may arise from the deal.
  • H4 and any planets in H4 show the end of the matter in taking or not taking the deal (house/land). (Note that we don’t look at the Lord.

Special conditions:

  • If L1 is in H1 or,
  • If L1 aspects by sextile or trine to the Ascending sign, or even better to the degree of the Ascendant,
  • Or if in H1 there be a fortune, whether essentially dignified or not,
  • Or if the POF is placed in H1 and not afflicted:

This is an argument that the querent (farmer) will take the house/land/farm, or that it will be a good bargain and he will profit from it and will be pleased with the deal.

Page 209:

If an infortune be in H1, the querent won’t be happy with the deal and will sell the property to someone else, or he simply won’t take the deal, or he will regret taking the deal.

Lilly tells us to now look at H7 (the seller):

  • If L7 is in H7 or,
  • L7 casts a good aspect to H7 or,
  • If a fortunate planet is in H7, then:

The seller will be honest, he will honor the deal, but he will profit from the deal.

If an infortune be in H7 and is not its lord, be very careful about the deal because the seller will not have the querent’s best interests in heart and only be looking out for his own interests.*

Then Lilly tells us to look at H10:

  • If a fortunate planet be in HJ10, then the deal will be made between the parties even if there are difficulties.
  • If there is an unfortunate planet or it beholds H10 with an opposition or square, the buyer will not take the property, if it is a house they will differ about the repairs it needs, if it is land the quality of the wood on the land.

Fourth house:

  • Look top H4 to see the end of the matter:
  • If L1 or the Moon applies to L4, or if L4 and the Moon applies to the Ascendant, especially with reception, then the party enquiring will buy the house.
  • If there is a fortune, or if L4 is in H4 or if L4 is in sextile or trine to it, the matter will come to a good end, both parties will be pleased.
  • If an infortune, the reverse is true and neither party will be pleased.

Pg 210: Chapter 34. (covered by Wade, see link just above)

If the Querent shall enjoy the Estate of his Father.

  • Ascendant and L1 is the querent, the father gets H4, L4 and any fourth house planets.
  • Personal estate and moveable goods of father is H5, L5 and any planets in H5 (H5 is 2nd house from H4)
  • If there is mutual reception between H2 and H5, querent will definitely enjoy the estate of his father;
  • But if L5 is retrograde or afflicted by a bad planet, some part of the estate will be wasted or disposed of by the father;
  • To see what the problem is, look at the afflicting planet by square, opposition or combustion (if the Sun) and what house it is the Lord of: e.g. if it is L6, then problems with siblings/tenants/neighbors will persuade father to change the Will.
  • If L7, then it is a woman or sweetheart of the father that does this;
  • If 12, a “sneaky person” or parish priest, or relatives of Mother  who changes Father’s mind.
  • If the querent wants to change the mind of the interfering person, the querent will be able to do this if the querent does so on a day when the malefic planet approaches a sextile, trine or conjunction to L1, and on that day find the Moon separating from one of the significators and applying to the other.

Otherwise:

  • If L5 disposes the Part of Fortune and is in H1 or H2, the querent will have his desires (the father’s estate).
  • The same if Jupiter or Venus make an aspect out of H5 to any planet in the querent’s second house.
  • If the Moon separates from L5and either has a sextile or trine to L2 or L1, this argues for the querent acquiring from Father.
  • If there is an infortune with no dignity in H4, Father will not want to part with his money; wait until the planet is out of the sign before trying again;
  • But if that isn’t possible, wait until the unfortunate planet is direct, swift, oriental and in sextile or trine with Venus, Jupiter or L1, the father at this time is likely to have more benevolent intentions.
  • If L5 or L2 apply by retrogradation to any good aspect, the querent will receive the estate/money by surprise/suddenly/when it is least expected.
  • To know if Father favors the querent better than his/her siblings, see if L3 or any planet in the third house is in a better aspect with L4 (father) than L1(the querent), of if there is any reception or translation of light the significators for the siblings and the father. The planet nearest L4 shows who the father loves best, as do the most powerful signifiers.

Pg 212: Chapter 35:

If good to remove from one house or place to another, or to stay or abide in any place or not?

Look at L1, L4, L7:

  • If L4 be in H7 and is a good planet,
  • And if L1 and L7 are good planets, or strong in the part of heaven that they are and of swift motion
  • And in good aspect with good planets,

Then it would be well to stay where one is.

If L7 is a good planet, but L4 is a bad one, then it is not good to stay, for bad things will happen if one does.

What Lilly has observed:

  • If L1 recently separated from L6, L8, or L12 by square or opposition, with the Moon doing the same thing with bad planets who are also lords of either L4 or L7 and not a significator or friends with the querent,
  • Or if we find an infortune in the ascendant peregrine or retrograde,
  • Of if a peregrine or unfortunate planet is found in H4
  • Or if the Lord of H2 is weak or ill posited,

Lilly advises to move, for the following reasons:

  • If L6 is in H1, either his health was bad in the location, or he was ill treated by his servants.
  • If L12 afflicted L1 or the Moon, his neighbors were evil and backbiting or people living not far from him would scandalize him;
  • If L2 was unfortunate or in square or opposition to L1 he loses his assets
  • Or if the POF was in H12, H8, or H6, querent went back in the world and his house was consumed.
  • (pg. 213) If L1 is afflicted by L10, then his reputation is lost, or his trade decayed or lost
  • If L4 was unfortunate or the fourth house itself, then Lilly judges that the house itself is unlucky, that people living there did not thrive,
  • If L7 afflicts L1 or L2, then his neighbors had all the trade.

Lilly gives this advice to the querent:

  • In order to know which way the querent should go to have more trade, Lilly looks at the strongest planet in the chart and had the most friendly aspect to L1 or L2.
  • Look at what quarter that strong planet is in, and Lilly advises the querent to go to that quarter.

Some say that to answer this moving question, we can look at the following:

Pg. 214:

  • If the Moon separates from Jupiter or Venus, then stay.
  • If she separates from an infortune, then move.
  • If a fortune in H1 then stay
  • If an infortune, then move.

Chapter 36

Of turning the course of rivers or bringing water into one’s ground or house, either by conduit or pipes.

Consider the strength of Saturn and the Moon:

Are they in aspect with either Jupiter or Venus?

  • If Saturn is direct, swift in motion, oriental and Moon in H3, H11 or H5 with no aspect (good or evil) to Mars, then the work will be easily performed and brought to a good conclusion.
  • If the Moon applies to the planet who is Lord of the sign she is in, and if the Lord received her in any of her dignities, and if the planet who receives the Moon is a fortune, and is ascending in latitude (?) , and in a fixed sign, then there will be plenty of water.
  • If Jupiter or Venus but especially Jupiter is in H10, it is sure the water will remain for a long time.
  • If Saturn is strong in H11 and the moon is trine or sextile with him, and the dispositor of the Moon is in a fixed sign, or a common one, or if the Moon is in a rain-producing sign which are Cancer, Leo, Aquarius and Pisces, this is an argument for plenty of water and the work going well.
  • But if there is an unfortunate planet in H10, it is probabl that the pipes will break or the water course having ruptures, essentially no success in the venture.

Chapter 37: pg. 215

Of Treasure lying hid in the Ground, or to be digged out of the Earth.

Para 1

Lilly stresses that it is important to know what the situation is, e.g.

  • does the treasure concern easily movable money, plates or jewels, or is the treasure something long hidden and the querent doesn’t even know what it is?
  • Is this a question concerning gold or other valuable minerals in the ground perhaps a hidden mine?
  • Was it the querent who hid the treasure, or was it someone else?
  • If it was someone else, what is the relation of the other party to the querent?

Para 2:

  • If the querent hid the treasure, then look to the sign of H2 as well as its Lord and the sign the Lord is in, also the quarter of heaven the Lord is in.
  • Also look at the sign of H4 and its lord and what quarter it is in.
  • If the Lords of H2 and H4 are in the angles, the plate is still in the house or in the ground: not removed.
  • If the planets (lords) are not in the houses, but rather there is an infortune without dignity in either H4 or H7, then either part of the treasure remains, or all has been removed.
  • If the figure promises that the treasure has not been removed, refer to Chapter 32 on things hid.

Para 3: pg. 216

  • If the querent wants to know about an unspecified treasure, i.e. not knowing what is exactly or who put it there, if Jupiter, Venus or the north node are in H4, then the treasure is probably there. If there in their own domicile, then there is definitely treasure.
  • If Mars or Saturn in domicile are found in H4 if they are direct and without impediment, treasure will be found.
  • If Venus in Taurus is in H4, it is probable there is treasure.  Lilly goes on to say there is no unfortunate planets if it is in its own house or essentially dignified and a significator.

Para 4:

  • If the querent does not know what the treasure and its true worth are, look at the planet who represents the treasure and see if it is in H7 . if it isn’t in H7, join L7 in aspect with him and blend the meanings to arrive at what the treasure and its quality are.
  • Para 5: If the significator of the treasure has no affinity with L7, then take L7 to represent what the treasure is e.g. if the Sun in domicile or exaltation, then the treasure is gold or jewels near to the color of the Sun.
  • Para 6: Is there a gold mine, yes or no? If the L7 signifier is the Sun, then yes. If not so well dignified, then still precious: near to gold.
  • Para 7: If the Moon is in Cancer or Taurus and L7, the treasure is silver, plate, crystal or jewels etc. and the same color as the Moon.

Para 8: page 216-217

  • If L7 is Mars and dignified, then the treasure is iron, brass or glass, if Mars is weak, then rusty iron candlesticks kettles etc.
  • If Saturn is L7 and dignified, antiques, monuments of ancient men, things wrapped in black cloth, old wooden boxes; it could be an iron mine, if that were the question, quarry of stone, coal mine, if Saturn is weak, then the mine is not a rich one, or full of water or some impediment, look to the sign to see what the problem is.
  • Para 9: If Jupiter is L7 and essentially strong, then silver or rich cloth, a lot of it, or tin.
  • Para 10: If Venus L7, then costly jewels, household stuff, linen.
  • Para 11: If Mercury, then books, writings, medals, pictures, pretty toys.

Pg 217 –

If the Querent shall obtain the treasure hid.

  • If the significator of the treasure applies to L1, it is probable that the querent will find the treasure.
  • If the aspect is opposition or square, then it will be found but with difficulty.
  • If by conjunct, then it is sure the treasure will be found.
  • If they are in a fixed sign and in H2, or in the Ascendant and not unfortunate, this makes the work of finding easy.
  • If neither of the significators are in the Ascendant but are both in cadent houses, there is little hope in finding any treasure.
  • If the POF is in the Ascendant with his Lord, the treasure will be found, but if the POF is candent and has no aspect to the lights esp. the Moon, there is no hope to find the treasure.
  • Al Kindi says that if there is a fortune in any angle then there is treasure in the ground and its worth determined by the condition of the planet.
  • Lilly goes on to say that if one sees a fortune in the angles, then look at L1 and the lord of the Moon and see if there is an aspect between them. If it is a good aspect, the treasure will be there.
  • Fixed signs show the treasure hidden in the earth, common signs near a wall, moveable signs on high or in the covering of houses,
  • To see how deep in the earth the treasure is, look at if the significator is at the beginning, in the middle or end of the sign. The further the planet is into the sign, the deeper one digs.
  • If the Moon is separating from the significator of the treasure and applying to the Ascendant, this is a good indication. Also the significator applying to trine or sextile with L2.  It is better if the infortunes do not occupy any angles.

Chapter 38:

If I should purchase Master B. His houses.

Pg 219 – Here we see that Lilly poses his own question. He underlined that he cast the chart when his mind was most perplexed about it.

Image from Christian Astrology, annotated by Deborah Houlding, pg. 106 (used with permission).

Pg 220

  • Go over basic buy/sell house significators: first house querent, seventh house seller/buyer, fourth house condition of house, 10th house the price of the house.
  • In the text opening, Lilly says first house, querent, seventh house seller.
  • Venus is Lilly, Venus is received by the Sun in his exaltation with the ASC ruler Venus at the cusp of H7.
  • No other planet in H7 signifying that Lilly was the only interested party. There were no other buyers.
  • Lilly interest exalted Sun as seller being high in his demands and in no need to sell, which proved to be the case. Note that the seller is not represented by Mars, ruler of H7, but take the Sun, the almuten of the H7 cusp. Mars is peregrine in this chart.
  • Despite Venus being in fall in Virgo and thus at a disadvantage, that Venus was received by the Sun gave Lilly hope, esp. since the Sun also rules the house of Lilly’s hopes and wishes, H11, which signified, for Lilly, that his hopes would be fulfilled.
  • Also, Venus is applying to L4 Saturn with no obstacles in the way, which for lilly meant that he would buy the house. This is underlined by Saturn’s mutual application due to Rx to Venus.
  • Sun is trine Saturn, which is significant because the sun rules H11 and Saturn H4, so there is a link to this house with Lilly’s hopes.
  • Saturn is significant because it beholds the ASC and is exalted in it. Also, Saturn is applying to H4 and trines the cusp of H11. This was an argument that he should proceed further in the matter and conclude it.
  • Moon is translating Mars’ H7 dignities to Saturn, who is exalted in the ASC. doing this by square (between Moon/Saturn), but by long ascension signs, so its like a trine. However, the square still meant the process would be slow.
  • Moon is afflicted and Venus unfortunate, so Lilly has a lot of work, sellar wanted a lot of money, shown by the Sun sextile Jupiter.
  • However, Jupiter is cadent and weak in detriment, showing that the sellar wouldn’t prevail in his price. Venus is angular and in aspect with Saturn, the significator of the houses,

Pg 221:

  • Sun is in H11  and since it is fifth from the seventh, the daughter of the seller sided with Lilly and didn’t let any other buyers enter into the picture while Lilly was getting his money together.  His L2 lord Mars was retrograde, so he didn’t have a penny.
  • Luckily, Jupiter was the lord of his POF, sextile with Sun; also sextile with Venus in detriment. Lilly thought he would come into money when Jupiter entered exaltation in Cancer and Mars went direct 12 days later, at which time a friend lent Lilly £500
  • Quality of house signified by H4 in Capricorn the Lord being Saturn, who Lilly interestingly says “has no material disabilities” other than being retrograde and cadent (!) but trine with the Sun: houses were old, but strong and good for many years to come.
  • When Venus and the sun went conjunct in Taurus on 25 April Lilly bargain and when Venus and the Moon were conjunct on 17 May the deal was done Lilly paid £530.
  • Distance between Venus and the Sun = 6°; it took Six weeks to close the deal.
  • Lilly talks about how the chart also shows physical marks and moles on his body.
  • Lilly sums things up and says that he didn’t get a great deal as shown by Venus in detriment in Aries, but that he was very happy in the house with his wife.  He takes a swipe at George Wharton.

—ooOoo—
