Rulers of the Second House

In traditional astrology the second house represents possessions and assets rather than one’s values, so the arena of life covered by the second house is more focused than what we find in contemporary astrology. The topic of what one “values” is spread out over the rest of the chart, for example planets in the fifth house would show us what one values in terms of children/amusements/pleasures. The tenth house would show us what the native values in terms of a career, and the like.

We use the 12-letter alphabet where Taurus = Venus = 2nd house in the astrology developed in the twentieth century. By contrast, in the astrological tradition from Hellenistic times up through and including the Renaissance, the symbolism of the houses was separate from that of the signs. To a certain extent, where the visible planets had their joys affected the correspondences of the houses, for example Venus has her joy in the fifth house, which is why traditional astrologers associate sex and dating with the fifth house rather than the eighth, the house of death. The assumption being that having sex and dating is fun and is a Venusian activity, rather than representing the definitive ending that we associate with death.  Well, at least that is what we hope!

The second house then represents all issues dealing with finances, resources, and earnings as well as the manner of obtaining wealth.  In horary astrology it additionally represents moveable possessions: your car, wedding ring, your computer, but not your apartment, which is a fourth house correspondence and is not moveable.

Ruler of the Second House in the Second House

When the ruler of a house resides in its own house, the agenda of the ruler corresponds exactly to the topics that concern the house. The second house is concerned on a general level with resources, wealth, income, and the manner of obtaining it. Whether we are looking at a natal or a horary chart, if the question concerns finances, the second house is the first place we look.

When we find the lord of the second house in the second house, the native will find security in accumulating things, becoming extremely fond of his or her possesions, like the figure in the four of Pentacles (above). The native can be concerned with making money for the sake of making money.

How this manifests will depend on the ruling planet and its aspects.  For example, with Saturn present in a night chart the native may have great fear of being without money, or may not have much of it, but is very cautious with what one has and making a little go a long way.  With Venus in this house the native might want to be surrounded by beautiful objects.  With a strong Mars they might be driven to earn in a dynamic fashion, and with infinite resouces to accomplish this, the Lord of the house being in its own house.  The danger is that even a lot is never enough, for having money and things is a fundamental issue with these people.
